Biafra: Court denies Kanu, others bail

Biafra: Court denies Kanu, others bail

Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has declined to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu  on bail pending his trial. In a ruling Friday, the court also denied bail to two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial with Kanu.

Justice Tsoho maintained that the charge against the defendants “is a grave one that will attract severe punishment upon conviction”. The court noted that the offence that was allegedly committed by the defendants, which borders on treasonable felony, attracts  life imprisonment. It held that the right to personal liberty of any individual takes secondary place once the issue of national security is involved.

Besides, Justice Tsoho observed that the defendants had in an affidavit they deposed in support of their bail application,  insisted that they have a right to agitate for self determination. “The situation as perceived by this court is that there is conflict of interest between the applicants who insist that they have a right to agitate and the respondent (Federal Government)  which argues that it has the responsibility to maintain peace and order.

“Personal liberty of an individual within the contemplation of Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution is a qualified right that is not absolute. It can be curtailed in other to prevent a person from committing further offence.”

My parents disowned me because of my love for music — Tea Jazz

My parents disowned me because of my love for music — Tea Jazz

Just as Cynthia Morgan revealed last year, she has a crush on HKN boss, Davido, a rising RnB singer, Itive Elvis popularly called Tea Jazz has equally expressed how much he’s secretly in love with the controversial dance-hall singer. A 200-level student of UNIBEN, Tea Jazz who has just concluded a collaboration with Yung6ix and currently working with Timaya on a new single says, he’s ceaselessly in love with Cynthia.
HOW did you delve into
music?

I started doing music way back in 2005, when I was in secondary school. Then I had to buy a fruity loops software which I used in making beats. I made some amateur beats and recorded on them.
I did a song titled “Super Lover” in 2012 and “U too Much” in 2013. But the songs have not been officially released. In 2014, I dropped a single titled “Miss Beautiful” featuring Antiviruz and later, I dropped the video which was directed by Fortune Filmz.

But professionally, I started doing music in 2010, as a 200-level student of the University of Benin. I ran into Antiviruz who was actually one of the hottest artistes in Benin. But unknown to me, he was my classmate.
Then I was scared of approaching him because he was a very big star in UNIBEN. But I eventually summoned courage to approach him, he asked me to see meet him in the studio the next day which I did. And that was it.

Would you say your impression about video vixen has inspired you to want to start a relationship with any of the video girls?
Not at all.
But can you marry a video vixen?
Certainly yes, if the attraction is there.
Are you in a relationship?
I’m still single and Searching. I’m yet to find the love of my life.
Do you have a crush on any female singer?
Of course yes. Star girl, Cynthia Morgan. I love for her ceaselessly.
How were you able to convince your parents that you wanted to go into circular music?
My Dad is a pastor. So, it a battle to win his support. I was disowned and later reintegrated into the family by my parents. They never supported me. They were like even if you are going to do music at all, it has to be gospel music. So, it was a challenge getting to where I am today. My parents withdrew their support from me. Even with my schooling, they stopped supporting me. They said, since I wanted to be a prodigal son, they wouldn’t support me in anything.
For the years you were disowned by your parents, how did you survive the rejection?
I started doing menial jobs such as car washing to survive. After a while, I thought it was better to make peace with my parents. So, I went back to them to say I was now ready to do gospel music.
Recording
the song

They accepted it, telling me that it was they expected of me. I was ready to do gospel music for real because I didn’t think it was not right to fall out with my parents. I went into the studio and recorded a gospel song titled “You too Much.” When I finished recording the song, I went home to play it for them. Surprisingly, my dad did not like the song, but my siblings did. At that point, I changed my mind again. I said to myself, since I have tried to do a gospel song and my dad did not see it as one, then gospel music wasn’t meant for me. I stood my grounds and went back to circular music. Then the face-off started again.
So when were you finally reintegrated into your family?

Until last year, I was not close to my family. They started supporting again but we didn’t have any that closeness. It took five years for my dad to understand that circular music is what I wanted to do. Though he does not still listen to my music, he now allows me to follow my dream.
How would you define your kind of music?

My kind of music is RnB, Naija Pop dance Hall. I don’t just do music I try as much as possible to make sense with my music. My music is message based.
You released your official single, ‘Ovakpo’ about a month ago. Would you say you are satisfied with what you put out there?

We haven’t released the bird from the net. That’s just a tip of the iceberg. There are greater songs to come. My new single, “Ovakpo” which means “escape route” is the song on everyone’s lips right now.
I have done the video for the single which is directed by prolific director Daniel Ugo with appearances from Yung6ix, Ksolo and Ycee. I’m planning to release more singles, videos and a lot of collaboration this year. I just did a song with Yungs6ix which will be released before the end of this month. Currently, I’m actually working with Timaya.

Missing 2016 budget ‘April fool’ – Dogara

As outrage continued to trail the reportedly missing 2016 Budget presented to the joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has described the reports as “an incredible and award winning April fool stunt.’

According to Wikipedia, April Fools’ Day (sometimes called April Fool’s Day or All Fools’ Day) is celebrated every year on 1 April by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes.
The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool joke expose their prank shouting April Fool.

Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.
Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (1392) contains the first recorded association between 1 April and foolishness.

Describing the reports of the missing 2016 Budget as a hoax that came too early in the year, Dogara who took to his Twitter handle, @doyakubu said: “1st April arrived too early this year on Twitter. 2016 Budget estimates stolen at NASS? Pretty funny stuff!

“It’s an incredible and award winning April fool stunt.
“The budget is in the custody of the Clerk to the House of Representatives. I can confirm no one has broken into his office.
“Each of the two Houses got a copy of the Budget estimate,” said the speaker.

Is Genevieve Nnaji Engaged?

Ghana Celebrities is reporting that the 38-year old actress is set to marry 29-year old “Alhaji” Ishaya Bako, the director of her latest movie Road to Yesterday before the end of 2016.
The website claims that the duo became friends after the actress moved to Abuja from Lagos about two years ago.

However, a spokesperson of Bako, who is also known for his Africa Movie Academy Awards movie, Braids on a Bald Head, and the 2012 documentary Fueling Poverty, on Tuesday denied the report. The source exclusively told loadedgizzy that the story is false.

“We have been laughing since we read it,” Bako’s spokesperson said. “But what can you do? It is not true.”
On Saturday, December 12, the former finance minister Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s son, Uzodinma Iweala, proposed to Genevieve on the red carpet for the premier of his movie Beasts of no Nation, but it was all in jest.

Genvieve, a mainstay in Nollywood since the late nineties, is notoriously single and a mother of one. She was previously linked to singer Dbanj, whom she had reportedly dated on and off since appearing in the video of his song Fall in Love.
Arms scandal: Not enough to take those indicted to jail – Bakare

Arms scandal: Not enough to take those indicted to jail – Bakare

A clergyman, Bishop David Bakare, has advised the Federal Government to reserve 10 per cent of the proceeds from the arms deal for the welfare of the families of Nigeria’s fallen heroes and ex-servicemen.  Bakare, Chairman, North-West chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), made the call in his sermon at an inter-denominational church service in Abuja on Sunday.
The service was in commemoration of the Armed Forces and Remembrance Day 2016. The clergyman, who decried the magnitude of corruption in the country even at the expense of human lives, said taking suspects to the anti-graft agencies was not enough to tame corruption. He added that government and other stakeholders must begin to show more appreciation for the contributions of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the unity and peace of Nigeria.
“There is a reward that our soldiers in the battle front deserve, there is a reward that our fallen heroes deserve and what they deserve is not for them to die and their children to die with them. “What they deserve is not to die for our country and their children cannot feed again. Those who laboured and died for our nation deserve honour.
“If we find those who have stolen our wealth, it is not enough to take them to EFCC, it is not enough to jail them, 10 per cent of every stolen money should be used to take care of the families of our fallen heroes.
“Today we are talking about the arms deal scandal and we hear that some people are returning money. “That money was meant to buy arms. If it was not used for that purpose and some soldiers lost their lives as a result of the act, then their children should be taken care of from the money recovered.’’
The clergyman urged government to use part of the money as scholarship and free education to the children or family of every soldier that lost his or her life as a result of the insurgency in the North East. Bakare said Nigeria must do more to motivate its trained military personnel in order to get the best out of them.
Bakare added that those found guilty in the ongoing probes of financial mismanagement in the country should be stripped of previous honours given to them by the country. According to him, streets in Abuja that have been named after those indicted in the ongoing probe should be replaced with more patriotic Nigerians that have sacrificed for the unity of Nigeria.
“In addition to the 10 per cent reserved from the proceeds of the arms loot, I want those concerned to go to the streets of Abuja and remove all those people’s names and put the name of a soldier who died one month after being married without a child. “Name a street after that soldier and others will be happy to serve this country.
“If we remember our fallen heroes, I believe that God is calling on us all to do a little more for our soldiers still serving and those who have fallen in the service of our fatherland.’’ The clergyman warned that God at His appointed time would intervene if the relevant authorities refused to do the right thing at the right time.
According to him, we must do the right things because if God decides to do what we have refused to do as leaders then it is going to be disastrous because there will be anarchy and calamity in the land. Speakers at the forum, in separate remarks, paid glowing tributes to the gallantry and sacrifice of Nigeria’s ex-servicemen The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, led service chiefs, some top government functionaries, political leaders and some members of the diplomatic community, to the church service.

Fayose hails Dickson victory, says Bayelsans’ve resisted imposition

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekit State has hailed the re-election of the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, describing it as a demonstration of the resolve of Bayelsa people to choose their own governor and resist imposition of a governor on them by the powers that be in Abuja.

The governor, who described the people of Bayelsa as “worthy heroes of democracy that stood their ground against agents of darkness that were prepared to short-change them by imposing a governor they do not want on them,” said Governor Dickson’s victory was another vindication of his prediction on 20 things to expect this year.

Governor Fayose said in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka that it was shameful that several people were killed in an election in Bayelsa State with eight Local Government areas in which more than 20,000 security personnel, including soldiers were deployed.

“If the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could not conduct a free and fair election in just eight Local Governments in one month, one wonders how long it will take INEC to conduct the president election that will be held in 774 Local Governments in 2019,” the governor said.

He lamented that the legacy of free, fair and credible elections bequeathed on Nigeria by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government of Dr Goodluck Jonathan was already being destroyed by the President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government owing to the APC’s desperation to take over all States in the country by crude means.

“The people of Bayelsa have shown that their power is more than that of the Abuja political oppressors. They have shown that tyranny can be defeated through the collective will of the people.

“I congratulate Governor Dickson for this sweet victory. I salute Bayelsa people for standing firm against terror. I sympathise with families of those that were murdered and I urge Nigerians to take note of the systematic destruction of democracy by the APC government in Abuja,” he said.

Charge Metuh to court if you have evidence of fraud against him - Fayose to Buhari

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, on Friday, challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to charge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh to court if the commission was sure of evidences of fraud against him, saying “the EFCC appears to be operating a system in which an accused person is first arrested, detained endlessly while the anti-corruption agency goes about looking for evidence.”

Disturbing Photos Of An Italian Transgender

A transgender woman, Fulvia Pellegrino, has said he will not stop until she has reached perfection in her looks.

In an interview with Mirror UK, Fulvia revealed he has spent £52,000 on plastic surgery, over 150 lip and cheekbone fillers, four breast implants, and two rounds of liposuction just to enhance her looks. The 56-year-old said he noticed as a young boy he was trapped in another man’s body at the age of 15. He could not however change his sex then from a male to a female because of the religious nature of his parents, especially his dad.

Fulvia however got married and 32 years later, decided it is time to change his sex. Surprisingly, Fulvia’s wife is fully supportive of the decision. The Italian has spent €12,000 (£9,000) on her bum and is planning even more surgery in her quest for the perfect face and body.

Remarkably, Fulvia’s wife, Marisa, is standing by her husband, although the pair are now more like sisters than a married couple. See photos below:

More Arrests To Come – EFCC Boss

Ibrahim Magu, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has given details on the ongoing war against corruption in Nigeria.

The chair of the anti-graft commission during the forum with online and broadcast media managers has revealed that more famous Nigerians would soon be arrested to face prosecution.
Magu added that since his appointment as acting chief of the EFCC, he had undertaken the re-ordering of the agency’s priorities for effective implementation of its mandate.

He said: “The effect of this, which is obvious for all to see, is the investigation, arrest and prosecution of some of the most powerful forces in Nigeria, who have questions to answer on their stewardship whilst in office.

“A former National Security Adviser, former ministers, former governors, serving and retired military men, a media mogul and several others, are among those we have called to answer critical questions concerning the management of our commonwealth.

“As we speak, many more influential Nigerians are on the radar of the EFCC and, in the coming weeks, they would have their days in court and Nigerians will be kept fully abreast of the results of our investigations,” Magu noted.

He said in carrying out the mandate of the commission, he has been ruled by the “fear of God, national interest and the rule of law”.
Meanwhile, the EFCC boss, said the agency cannot succeed in carrying out its mandate without the support of the media.

Magu stated that the anti-graft commission already has the support of all relevant bodies and organizations.
According to him President Buhari totally supports the actions of the EFCC.

“By far more inspirational is the political will of Mr. President to fight corruption. This unbending will, which some now call body language has given the needed traction to the anti-graft campaign,” he said.

Magu cited Buhari as saying:“I don’t …tolerate corruption. When I was Head of State, I didn’t put anybody above the law. At this time, I assure you, I will not put anybody above the law… If anyone is caught, I will not only sack (him or her) but will ensure that the case is taken to court”.

The EFCC is currently investigated $2,2bn arms deal scandal, one of the biggest corruption cases of nowadays.
Many prominent Nigerians and leaders are being accused of collecting huge sums of money from the Office of the National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki.
The anti-graft commission has just yesterday arrested the spokesperson of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party Olisa Metuh.

Ambode Receives Reports On Ibeju-Lekki Killing

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state on Wednesday December 6, received a report of the five-man tribunal of inquiry which investigated the civil unrest in Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

The sad incident which occurred on October 12, 2015  led to the death of Alhaji Tajudeen Disu, the managing director of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited.

While receiving the report, Ambode appreciated members of the tribunal for diligently carrying out the assignment within the time frame given, and expressed hope that they would be willing to serve the state when called upon.

The governor however,  promised his government will give serious consideration to the recommendations of the tribunal and take decisions to ensure that such an incident does not reoccur.

”Let me assure members of the public and investors alike that this Government will always uphold the Rule of Law and continue to provide a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive,” he said.

Governor Ambode had on October 22, 2015, inaugurated the tribunal chaired by a retired Lagos State High Court Judge, Hon. Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi, with the mandate to inquire into the origin, factors and circumstances leading to the breach of peace, as well as make recommendations to government based on the findings.

While describing the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) as an important project to the economy of the state because of its strategic importance to the job creation drive of his administration, Governor Ambode said he was prepared to do everything to ensure its success.

Earlier, the attorney general and commissioner for justice, Adeniji Kazeem, said it was noteworthy that the tribunal had the inaugural sitting on November 16, 2015 and completed the assignment within the stipulated 45 days.

Kazeem said the civil disturbances which led to Disu’s killing in the Okunraye Community had slowed down the development of the LFTZ, and that the tribunal was set up as part of efforts to ensure safety of lives and property; prevent recurrence and enhance the economic well-being of the State.

In his remarks, Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said the tribunal received a total of 22 memoranda and 33 witness statements, including those from eminent Nigerians.
He added that the tribunal made a total of 24 recommendations which covered many issues including the question of who pulled the trigger that killed Disu, as well as the remote and immediate causes of the civil unrest.

According to him, the tribunal also recommended measures to adopt in forestalling a recurrence as well as other miscellaneous matters incidental to the unrest, adding that there was no majority or minority report, but just one team report from the tribunal.

” We took time out to visit the Lekki Free Trade Zone. We visited the Dangote Industries, Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, the villages and communities in the area including Okunraye where the trouble began.
”We saw a lot and we learnt a lot. From what was presented to us, from what we saw, our view is that Lekki Free Trade Zone has vast potential to transform the economic landscape of Lagos state in terms of generating massive employment, creation of wealth, generating revenue and so on,” Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said.

Exclusive: Inside IS Terror Weapons Lab

Experts describe the footage obtained by Sky News of a "jihadi technical college" as an intelligence gold mine.

Terror group Islamic State is employing scientists and weapons experts to train jihadists to carry out sophisticated "spectacular" attacks in Europe, while also modifying weapons systems capable of targeting passenger jets and military aircraft.
From a "jihadi university" in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the scientists have stunned western weapons experts by producing a homemade thermal battery for surface-to-air missiles.
It had been regarded as a virtually impossible feat for terror groups working without a military infrastructure.

But footage exclusively obtained by Sky News shows that IS can now recommission thousands of missiles assumed by western governments to have been redundant through old age.
Heat-seeking warheads can be used to attack passenger and military aircraft. They are 99% accurate once locked on.

For decades terror groups, including the IRA, had these weapons but storing them and maintaining the thermal battery - a key component to the warhead - was very difficult.
It seems that IS scientists have got round the problem, and that revelation will shock the world of international security.
The IS research and development team has produced fully working remote controlled cars to act as mobile bombs, while they have fitted the cars with "drivers"; mannequins with self-regulating thermostats to produce the heat signature of humans, allowing the car bombs to evade sophisticated scanning machines that protect military and government buildings in the West.
The group trained fighters from a variety of countries to carry out attacks and to train more jihadists in their own countries.
An IS trainer with more than eight hours of unedited training videos was captured by the remnants of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) as he headed north through Turkey towards Europe.
The FSA passed the material to Sky News but was not aware of the importance of the videos, described by a weapons adviser to the British military as an intelligence "gold mine".
Using aerial and satellite imagery Sky News has identified the location of the "university" and pieced together the apparently random collection of video files to reveal the true extent of IS's sophisticated development and training team.
Although this type of activity had been widely suspected by western intelligence services, this is the first concrete evidence that it is taking place.
Crucially, it is far more developed than had previously been thought possible.
Groups of trainees from a range of countries including Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Tunisia, Egypt and Pakistan were given terror training courses using science labs and facilities based around the former Equestrian Centre in Raqqa.
The extensive collection of videos shows the men being trained to adapt the electronic parts of scrap cars to make the remote controlled cars work using sophisticated un-jammable radio sets; and long lessons on how to configure the mannequins to appear like human drivers.

Some of the trainers and designers make no effort to disguise themselves but the "students" remain largely concealed.
While it is clear that all those involved have a clear idea what their objective is, at no point do they reveal the nature of their intended targets.
Security analysts believe it is an indicator that they are trying to preserve their own operational security while accepting that they need to train and circulate the videos to followers abroad.
Major Chris Hunter, a former bomb technician in the special forces and adviser to the British military, said he was shocked at some of the developments revealed in the videos.
He said: "I think this is one of the most significant intelligence finds in terms of Daesh.
"What we've seen with their typical propaganda videos is they're very, very high quality.
"They're designed, they're produced to inspire people and prospectively touch the nerves of anybody who is viewing them; they're done in a very specific way.
"With this training footage it's very clearly purely designed to pass on information - to pass on the progress in the research and development areas - and it gives us a very good insight into where they are now, what they're aspiring to do and crucially the diversity of the types of threats we might face.
"So I would say it's an intel gold mine."
In one of the videos a man speaking in Russian walks a camera through a store containing an array of explosive materials from TNT, improvised missiles to plastic explosives.
He explains how the materials can all be used to make bombs if they have obtained the correct fuses.

In Turkey an IS defector confirmed to Sky News that a top secret training programme was known about in Raqqa, his home town. He confirmed the programme was designed for attacks in Europe and further afield.
The defector told Sky News: "Videoing and documenting this training programme was meant for Europe to cause huge damage.
"If it was meant internally (inside Syria) they could send someone to set an explosive device or wire a car as they are able to do this (openly).
"But doing such a programme and documenting it was meant to target a large number of people and in more than one location, of course it wasn't meant either for Syria or Iraq."
This collection of videos is far more serious than anything we have seen from IS before.
A jihadi college training foreign fighters to fight in other countries, while developing missiles to continue the war in Syria, was suspected but never seen.
Although this film was intercepted it is thought likely there will be others in circulation, and there are hundreds if not thousands of jihadists eager to learn.
Sky News has alerted the authorities to the material that has come into its possession.
The Foreign Office responded with a statement: "Daesh will use all measures at their disposal to cause harm, and Britain will never be cowed by such terrorists. Our values are so much stronger than theirs. It will take time but this is an organisation that is losing territory and will be defeated."

BREAKING: NFF Official Shot Dead

Nigeria Football Federation Protocol Head was murdered in cold blood by dare-devil armed on Wednesday
Ibrahim Abubakar., 43, was brutally murdered in cold blood by dare-devil armed robbers in his home at Kado Estate near Gwarinpa in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

A traumatized NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said of Abubakar’s sudden death:
“He was full of life when he left the office yesterday; the Federation has lost a dedicated and assiduous staff. This is so painful.”

‘Ibro’ as he is fondly called, joined the Nigeria Football Federation in 2007. He will be buried later today at his residence in Kaduna according to Islamic rites.

He is survived by a wife and three boys. May his gentle soul rest in peace, Amen.

Interrogating the budget of Buharinomics

IF there is anybody I can vouch for in Buhari’s Cabinet, it is Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. I have known him, and his best friend Keem Bello Osagie, for 30 years. All three of us are graduates of Oxford University, England, although I was there before him and Keem. Udoma is as sharp as a razor; he is one of the most intelligent people I know. Better still, he is a man of unimpeachable integrity. Udoma cannot be bought. He has a very successful law practice; the last thing he would do is fiddle public funds.
Udoma was a two-term Senator of the Federal Republic, where he distinguished himself representing Akwa Ibom. His people would always remember him as the man who ensured that Akwa Ibom now receives one of the biggest, if not the biggest, share of oil money from the federal government. While many of his Senate colleagues pocketed N50 million bribes to support Obasanjo’s dastardly third-term bid, including those who nevertheless voted against it; Udoma rejected the bribe and joined the campaign against the scheme.
Thereafter, he knew even his re-nomination as PDP Senate-candidate from Akwa Ibom would be blocked. So he quietly bid the Senate and politics goodbye. But righteousness will always exalt a man. Udoma was sought after by blue-chip companies. He re-surfaced as Chairman of UAC and a Director of Unilever. He also became in 2010 chairman of the Governing Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Planning in a hurry
On 11 November, 2015, President Buhari appointed Udoma as Minister of Budget and Planning. Six weeks later, the president presented the 2016 budget to the National Assembly. This makes the budget an inevitable casualty of timing. A new Nigerian president is sworn in at the end of May in an election year. He is expected to have his cabinet in place by June. That would give a Minister of Budget and Planning six months to work on a budget.

However, when Buhari became president in the middle of an economic crisis, the first thing he did was to squander the first five months. In that time, anti-corruption propaganda became a substitute for policy. The economy nose-dived; going from bad to worse. Queried about the delay in choosing his cabinet, the president bad-mouthed anticipated ministers as “noise-makers.” When he finally succumbed to the Constitution by unfolding his Cabinet, the year had virtually come to an end.

Udoma is a man well-prepared for public office. However, in the short-term, he will have to defend as, a team-player minister, a budget unlikely to be his brainchild. Udoma could not have known he would be the Minister of Budget and Planning. But now he has to defend a budget he could not have planned. Frankly, there are a number of things in this budget that are indefensible.

In the medium-term, Udoma is in the unenviable position of being an economics minister to a president who clearly has very limited understanding of economics. Worse-still, he is minister to a president who castigates ministers as noise-makers. That indicates Buhari is not likely to be open to wise counsel. It would not surprise me if schemes like the ante-diluvian counter-trading are mooted again from Aso Rock sooner or later.

Pretend Budget

The first thing that becomes noticeable in the 2016 budget is that it is a budget of pretension. Nigeria is still a monocultural economy. The oil, on which the lionshare of the nation’s income depends, has suffered a drastic decline in price in the international market. But the government has decided to pretend as if nothing has happened. No austerity whatsoever is entertained. As a matter of fact, in the name of stimulating the economy, the president has decided to present a budget that assumes Nigeria has suddenly become richer overnight, when in fact we have become poorer.
Buhari presents N6.08trn 2016 budget to NASS

This is a very neat trick. In 2015, the total federal budget was N4.45 trillion naira. In 2016, in the middle of an economic downturn, this has been increased dramatically to N6.08 trillion. The new 2016 budget is based on the price of oil being $38 a barrel, ignoring the fact that the price has already fallen below that to $36. Indeed, the IMF projects the price might fall even further in 2016 by $5 to $15; bringing it down to as low as $20. But the government is not prepared to contemplate that eventuality. How can the APC enjoy the trappings of power if, after so long in the political wilderness, its turn is now to be constrained by austerity?
Therefore, observe the following contradictions. In the middle of looming economic adversity, the government has decided to be even more profligate than the previous administration. For example, in 2014, the budget for Aso Rock was N12 billion. In 2015, President Jonathan judiciously reduced this to N6.6 billion. But in 2016, Buhari has raised this by 50% to N18 billion. One of the more ludicrous aspects of this is the N3.6 billion earmarked for the purchase of an unspecified number of BMW saloon cars!
Clearly, there will be no austerity in Aso Rock in 2016. As a matter of fact, it would appear that elephants will be on the menu for lunch. A whopping N1.75 billion has been budgeted for feeding in Aso Rock in 2016. Goodluck Jonathan was pilloried for spending N1 billion in 2011. He reduced this to N717 million in 2013; N542 million in 2014; and N530 million in 2015. But now Buhari has decided to increase this by more than 100%. N115 million is budgeted for foodstuffs and catering materials for President Buhari alone, an increase of over 64% above that of President Jonathan.

If you were of the view that the president has spent too much of his honeymoon period gallivanting abroad this year, think again. N1.4 billion has been allocated for his travel expenses in 2016; N470 million more than that of Jonathan in 2015. The maintenance of the 10 aircraft presidential fleet that the president attacked as wasteful when he was asking Nigerians for our votes will cost N3.6 billion in 2016. N764 million is budgeted for the construction of recreational facilities just for Mr. President.
The same lavishness is also proposed for the vice-president. Not to be left out, the National Assembly will cost us nothing less than N115 billion.

These are the kinds of changes the APC has in store for Nigeria in fiscal 2016.
Voodoo Buharinomics

Where is the money for all the extra expenditures in 2016 supposed to come from given the sharp reduction in our income? There is a lot of talk about squeezing more money out of taxation, creating greater efficiencies in the MDAs, and generating more income from agriculture and solid minerals. But it is just talk.
Only N29 billion is devoted to the Ministry of Agriculture, while more money, N39 billion, is earmarked for Ministry of Information and Culture. But of course, Lai Mohammed has already told us he plans to have one cultural festival a day, 365 days in 2016; although he has already missed a few days.
Principally, the government has decided to go a-borrowing. It proposes to borrow N1.88 trillion in 2016; 30.9% of the total budget; N1 trillion more than was borrowed in 2015. This is where the whole thing gets even more ludicrous.

When the APC came to power, the first thing it attacked was Nigeria’s debt-profile under the previous Jonathan administration. Vice-President Osibajo complained that: “Our economy is currently in perhaps its worst moment in history. Local and international debt stands at $60 billion.”

The APC answer to this predicament is now to borrow more in 2016 than we did in 2015. Osibajo complained that our debt-servicing bill in 2015 was N953 billion. How then are we to understand the APC decision to increase that debt-servicing bill to N1.8 trillion in 2016; an increase of nearly 100%. Osibajo complained that our debt-servicing bill was 21% of the budget under Jonathan in 2015. But now under Buhari, 30.9% of the total federal budget in 2016 is going to be financed by debt.

Suddenly, the same government that complained it inherited a huge burden of debt from the PDP now argues that Nigeria is under-borrowed. That is the new truth now being dished out by government spin-doctors. Kemi Adeosun, the new Finance Minister, now says Nigeria’s debt to GDP ratio is low at 12%. She compares this conveniently to Angola (57%) and South Africa (48%).

In which case, our indebtedness is no longer an albatross. Since the APC has replaced the PDP at the centre, we can now borrow as much as we like. This is all well and good. Except that it is exactly how we got into the debt predicament of the 1980s and 1990s. It means in 2016, we will spend N4 billion every day on debt-servicing.

Productive debt

The government promises that, this time, it is only going to borrow for capital projects. But it cannot tell us precisely what these capital projects are. All we have are promissory notes that they will be for infrastructural projects like roads, rails and power supply. However, promissory notes from this APC government are no longer worth a dime.

In 2015, the federal budget was N4.5 trillion. Nevertheless, the government was able to gather as much as N1.5 billion into the TSA account. This represents money not spent from previous budgets. This should tell us that we did not even have the capacity to spend what we earned. Monies voted for recurrent expenditure gets gobbled up more or less. But capital projects are either ignored, uncompleted, or big chunks of the earmarked money are stolen.

What the government now proposes to do is to increase even that usually unspent money, without first fixing the underlying lack of capacity-utilization. Since the government actually has no structural anti-corruption policy, beyond declaring its enemies guilty without trial, all that might happen here is that we are simply making more money available for graft.

Then there is the brilliant idea of employing 500,000 graduates as teachers in the rural areas. Quite apart from the difficulty of assembling and equipping these graduates, the cost of the project is prohibitive. A modest 50,000 monthly wage bill will come to N300 billion per annum, while the total amount allocated for education is N369 billion.

My conclusion is simple. The APC won the election in the wrong country. The government should be shipped elsewhere; perhaps to France.

Real Madrid Sack Rafa Benitez, Appoint Zinedine Zidane

Rafa Benitez has been sacked by Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane has been named as his replacement.

Florentino Perez  who is the owner of Los Blancos is said to be displeased with the recent poor form of the club as they have now slipped to third and four points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid.

Benitez who has also coached English clubs Liverpool and Chelsea has endured a tough season at the Bernabeu since taking over in June 2015, having fall-outs with some key players of the club. Their 2 – 2
draw against Valencia simply forced the management to take the crucial decision.
Real president Florentino Perez said: “I am here to say that the board has just decided, in a difficult decision, especially for me, to end contract of Rafa as first-team coach. I would like to make it clear that he is a great professional. Zinedine Zidane knows better than anyone what it is like to stand at the front and lead Real Madrid. Throughout his career he has always been able to face up to huge challenges. He is one of the greatest players of all time. Zinedine, this is your club, your stadium and you have all our support. Zidane you are, from this moment, the trainer of Real Madrid.”
A top source to the club revealed that the three-time world footballer of the year prefer a summer change but won’t turn down the chance to manage the ten-time European champions.
Revered Spanish football expert Guillem Balague spoke with Sky Sports and suggested that club president Florentino Perez might have lost confidence in Benitez many weeks ago.

He said: “Perez often says the opposite things privately. Over the last few weeks, he’s been saying Benitez is not the problem, he’s the solution. That’s what he said publicly.
“At the same time, he held a poll before Christmas with season ticket holders on who they would like as a replacement. He was was just waiting for the right moment to do what seems inevitable.
“It’s quite clear Benitez doesn’t have the confidence of the board or Perez. Perez wants Jose Mourinho to come back, there is no doubt about it, but if he did that right now he’ll have to get rid of five or six players, as some of the big players at Real Madrid do not want Jose Mourinho back.
“So how Florentino Perez sort that out? I don’t know. It won’t be now, it won’t be for a while. Who he is trying to convince is Zidane, but Florentino is not 100 per cent convinced that Zidane himself is the solution.
“So with no clear alternative, all that debate is happening at board level, and with Florentino and his entourage.”
The club is expected to an official announcement soon.

Fani-Kayode threatens Buhari, says ‘hell will break loose’ if Dasuki, others are harmed

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has sent a terse message to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying “all hell will break loose” if some high profile detainees in the country are harmed in any way.
In a message posted on his Facebook page, Mr. Fani-Kayode said,
“… President Buhari and his government should please take note of the following:
“Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, Colonel Sambo Dasuki and Mr. Nnamdi Kanu must NOT be beaten, tortured, poisoned or murdered whilst they are in your custody or else all hell will break loose.”
Mr. Dasuki, who is facing trial for allegedly diverting and sharing over $2.2 billion dollars meant for arms procurement for the anti-Boko Haram war, to politicians and cronies, was on Wednesday re-arrested by the State Security Service after he was granted bail by three different courts.
Mr. Kanu, who is spearheading the quest for an independent nation of Biafra, was earlier granted bail by a Federal high Court sitting in Abuja, but he was also re-arrested by the SSS, which slammed a fresh charge of treasonable felony against him.
Mr. El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, is being held by the police after troops of the Nigerian Army killed a yet unknown number of his followers, and destroyed the organisation’s headquarters in Zaria.
Speaking during his first presidential media chat at the presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr. Buhari said Mr. Dasuki and Mr. Kanu cannot be allowed to enjoy any form of freedom due to the enormity of their offences.

Mr. Fani-Kayode recently wrote an open letter to President Buhari, accusing him of making ‘contradictory’ and ‘patently dishonest’ assertions.
The former minister told the President, “Your penchant for blaming your failings in this regard on the previous administration is simply nauseating and it does not serve you well.
“You continuously contradict yourself when it comes to this matter and frankly such flip flops are unworthy of the office that you presently occupy.
“We your subjects look up to you for consistency, strength, unequivocal commitment, a firm resolve and the “leadership from the front” that you promised during your presidential campaign in this war. We do not want and neither do we need doublespeak, lame excuses and buck-passing.”
Rights Group Outraged By Mbaka's Propecy About Buhari

Rights Group Outraged By Mbaka's Propecy About Buhari

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) is outraged by the prophecy recently made by Rev Father Ejike Mbaka who alleged a plot to assassinate President Muhammadu Buhari.

It should be recalled that the cleric raised alarm in his January 1 message:
“Many people are planning to kill Buhari; there are many plans on how to eliminate his life so that corruption will continue; so that embezzlement will continue. “
In reaction, non-governmental organization HURIWA tagged Mbaka’s prophesy as “sensationalism”, “rumour peddling” and “delusional fantasy”, Thisday reports.
The rights group has urged the Nigerian Catholic hierarchy to sanction the cleric over his shifting from sacred vocation to political games. Moreover, the body tops threaten to drag Mbaka to the Holy Father Pope Francis if the Catholic Bishops Conference fails to take appropriate action.
This was contained in a statement signed by HURIWA officials Emmanuel Onwubiko and Miss Zainab Yusuf.
“Mbaka should cover his face in shame for displaying gross ignorance of the workings of the democratic and law based tenets and provisions of the constitution which deems suspects brought before the court of competent jurisdiction as totally innocent in the eye of the law until contrary determination is made by the court in line with due process of the law.
“Is Fr Mbaka a judge who has passed presiding over cases of alleged graft involving any immediate past political office holder and adjudged them guilty of corrupt practices? Is Fr Mbaka unaware that as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces that President Muhammadu Buhari is the most protected citizen in Nigeria now with hundreds of well armed and highly trained professional guards drawn from the Nigerian military and the secret police headed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s kinsman?
“Is Fr Mbaka unaware that Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari is waging a counter-terror war and that the armed Islamists have vowed in several media recordings to kill not just the Commander-in-Chief but officials of government? This Mbaka’s whitewash must be consigned to the dustbins without further delay.”
